Are you willing to be obsessed in facets of your life in order to see success, or are you satisfied with being average?
Are you satisfied with barely getting by, or do you want to live out loud doing the things you love every single day by playing full out in your life?
Only YOU can take ownership of that energy and it is up to you to DECIDE If you will harness your full potential.
I love to listen to podcasts, to read books that challenge my beliefs and make me think and to work on my personal growth and development every day.
I listened to an interview with Grant Cardone yesterday on a podcast as I was on my weekly Monday run and the message that he spoke came ringing through my headphones loud and clear. He has written a book called “Be Obsessed or Be Average!” I want to take some time today to explore this phenomenon and to have you check in on the status of your own life. Are you living a life of mediocrity, or are you ready to take your life to a whole new level and seriously live out loud?
Are you willing to be obsessed in facets of your life in order to see success, or are you satisfied with being average?
As John Stuart Mill stated: “the general tendency of things throughout the world is to render mediocrity the ascendant power among mankind.”
According to the Oxford dictionary Mediocre can be defined as: “Of only average quality; not very good. And mediocracy – A dominant class consisting of mediocre people, or a system in which mediocrity is rewarded.”
‘a mediocracy of successful careerists and yes-men’
Are you a YES Man or woman, someone who repeatedly does things to please others and to satisfy their wishes, or are you willing to say NO and to step out into your zone of greatness?
Are you willing to be obsessed in facets of your life in order to see success, or are you satisfied with being average?
I have been having conversations with my husband around this topic over the last few months, especially as the new year came around and it was a fresh start with 12 months ahead of me in my life and my business, which truly is a gift as far as being able to have the new year and the time to explore and attempt new endeavours in my now personal growth as well as in my team and with my business.
My husband has been encouraging me to do different things and to not follow the status quo or to repeat the behaviours that haven’t been serving me in growing my business and to do things DIFFERENTLY.
Here is where the rubber meets the road. Here is where the ideas of Grant Cardone and that of my husband really start to align and clearly it was a message I was meant to hear and learn from.
I had to ask myself the question, if I continue to repeat the same daily patterns and routines I am currently completing, will that move me in the direction of time and financial freedom and will it help me achieve my goals and aspirations, or do I need to be obsessed and refuse to settle for average?
For me, the answer is clear – I REFUSE to be average and I am disatissfied with some of the aspects of my life – so in order to get different results, I need to DO different things.
Let me give you an example of something I am obsessed with. I am obsessed with fitness and my health and wellbeing. I was disasstified with my energy levels and the fact that when I was teaching I could find all too many reasons to say I am too tired, too busy and I don’t have time. I was in a place where I refused to feel like this any longer, so I made a decision to become fitness Instrcutor and have to be fit and on stage as a part of my daily routine. I became obsessed with moving my body, exploring all that it was capable of doing and then living a life of fitness, health, nutrition and empowering you to step into that zone. I am willing to be obsessed with this perspective and to help and impact people in this realm and I don’t worry about the opinions of others on my path as it is something I believe in wholeheartedly and I workout and train 5 days without fail. It is so important to me and I refuse to go back to the lack of energy or focus I had when I was overwhelmed and BUSY.
I have made heaps of mistakes over the past 6 1/2 years in my business, in my teaching career and in my life and I have learned from them. I sacrificed my time with my family and I put the needs of everyone else before my own, and my health was not great, I was tired, over worked and under appreciated. I now refuse to live in that space and I express my gratitude for being able to create and design my ideal day in my work life and to connect with those who align with my vision. I choose to again be obsessed with impacting people’s lives in a positive manner and I am forever grateful I moved away from being a cog in the wheel that just kept turning, and even when I left – no one missed a beat or missed me being there!
These mistakes allow me to speak from experience and to carve a path for all of you to follow if you so choose, because when you share your mistakes and the lessons learned from them, you can help so many people to avid those same pitfalls.
I want to help you shine, to not live a life of mediocrity and to step into your gifts sooner rather than later when time has passed by and it is “too late” to make a change. This is a perception that you may hold and that is held by far too many. Life is too short to wait, the timing will never be RIGHT and if you are disatisfied by some aspect of your life – the time to make a change is NOW.
Grant Cardone explains that you need to use that dissatisfaction to your advantage and to let it fuel you into action.
If you think about it, this makes perfect sense – so what holds you back? The status quo holds you back. The voices and opinions of others in your life telling you who do you think you are for stepping out of doing something different hold you back. YOU hold yourself back because it is a scary place to live In when you go after your dreams and you refuse to stay stuck!
Think about a time when you were really excited about starting a new job, a new exercise regime, or perhaps a new health challenge.
How did the people around you act when you told them about your plans to being this new endeavour? Were they happy for you and totally supportive? Or were they negative with all kinds of stories on what could go wrong, how they had had a negative experience in that realm or idea and how it will never work for you as it didn’t work for them. Did your social circle, your family and friends all project their own experiences, fears, worries and concerns onto you in order to hold you back – YES! They may not have done it on purpose, but that is the will of the average and to living the life of mediocrity, to stay where you are and to not spread your wings and FLY!
I know when I decided to walk away from my teaching career of 15 years in order to pursue my passion in health, wellness, speaking and mentorship, people told me I was CRAZY!
They said what are you doing, teaching is a stable profession and you have the best pension on the planet. They also said you already have the summers off and great vacations, you work at one of the best schools in the country and you seem to have it all. Why would you walk away from that?
People projected their stories, their thoughts and their beliefs onto me and my choices made them uncomfortable. I was challenging the status quo and for some, they couldn’t get me out of their space fast enough as I would rock the boat!
These are the voices of the naysayers, and the people who are living a life of medioctrity – those who are living a life of average instead of being willing to step up and being willing to risk or fail.
What have you done in this scenario in the past when you wanted to try something new in your own life? Did you listen to their stories, their advice and the gruesome details and then own them as or your own? Did that stop you in your tracks and change your thoughts around your goals and dreams? Did they tell you to STOP PURSUING YOUR DREAMS BECAUSE SOMEONE TOLD YOU THAT IT COULDN’T BE DONE AND YOU WERE SILLY TO FOLLOW THOSE DREAMS?
If so, you are not alone. You are again in that status quo where people want you to stay as you are, to not rock the boat and to not attempt new things. You begin to own their stories and you become a story collector, rather than a story creator.
In order to move into the life that you are truly capable of living and with your full potential, you need to be willing to challenge that status quo, you need to be willing to risk your social esteem being challenged and you need to perhaps even move on from some relationships and friends in your life who are holding you back.
You need to not follow the footsteps in the sand, you need to create your own path and diverge away from the norm or the average!
You need to release the kinks in your hose that are keeping you from feeling the energy of the universe flowing through your body.
This concept comes from another talk that I listened to, where Peta Kelly – who has been named as one of the top influencers in business by Inc Magazine – describes the energy that is available to you in the universe if you are just willing to tap into it and find your ease and flow.
If you think of a water hose, when it is working well, there are no kinks in the hose, the water flows freely through it and it functions well.
The same thing can be said of you as a being filled with potential and energy. If you don’t have any kinks in your hose, you will find that state of flow where things happen with ease, where ideas come to you at a rapid rate and where things just seem to fit together like the piece of a puzzle.
You will be in ALIGNMENT with your inner thoughts, drives, motivators and the potential that lies within.
Have you ever experienced that state before – this is you allowing yourself to step into the potential you have inside, to get rid of the kinks in your hose and to take steps away from being average. This occurs when you take steps away from the things you feel OBLIGATED to do, and you work towards doing the things that set your soul on fire that you are dying to do!
REFUSE TO LIVE IN A STATE OF OBLIGATION!
ASK YOURSELF _ IF I HAD ALL OF MY ENERGY AND LIFE FORCE AVAILABLE TO ME, WHAT WOULD THAT LOOK LIKE IN MY LIFE? HOW WOULD I FEEL IN THIS STATE?
Grant Cardone has been quotes as saying “your greatness is limited only by the investments you make in yourself.”
What investments have you made in yourself lately?
When was the last time you listened to a podcast, went to an event that challenged your beliefs and your boundaries or read a book that even was perhaps in opposition to your current belief system or ways of thinking?
When was the last time you challenged your stories and you owned total responsibility for the life you are currently living?
You are the only person in this world who can determine your fate, your life and your results.
It is time to take full responsibility for where you are right now – in your health, your finances, your relationships and your happiness.
You have made the decisions that have got you where you are today. You have made the choices along the way to purchase various items, to generate potential debts and to potentially be living and unhealthy life that isn’t serving you.
The great news?? YOU have the power to STOP those behaviours that aren’t serving you and to OWN your future!
You have the power to choose a different path and you have the POTENTIAL inside of you that can allow you to break the mold of being average and to be GREAT at your inner gifts and strengths.
YOU CAN CREATE YOUR OWN STORY AND YOU CAN STOP OWNING AND COLLECTING STORIES THAT OTHERS PROJECT ONTO YOU.
Will it be hard? YES
Will there be haters along the way? YES they will come out of the woodwork to try to bring you back to the land of mediocrity, to living in the status quo and to be safe.
You will have to choose if the you that you have inside you that is bursting to get out and to totally live into your potential is worth developing.
Now I am not telling you to turn your whole world upside down and to leave everything you are currently doing, but I am asking you to view your world through different lenses. Embrace who you are and where you are at – then look to be the best version of you in that role. Be the very best teacher, accountant, doctor, business person etc that you can be – but then look for rooms to grow or for new opportunities wherever you can to become a better version of you.
Your energy, your freedom, your happiness and everything in your life is ALL UP TO YOU and no one else, so don’t let anyone else step in and run the show for you!
Ask yourself if you are going to take responsibility for your own freedom or not? What will you do differently this week in order to take steps to make that happen? Write it down! State it out loud and OWN it!
Create the habit of designing this new life force and adventures in your head and seeing it come to fruition each and every day.
I use the five Minute Journal every day and it is wonderful habit to work on to start and finish the day each day. You can find this book on Amazon or in bookstores. It is a practice of writing down what you are grateful for as you begin your day. You reflect on what would make today great and you write out your affirmations for the day as if they are already happening In a state of I AM.
Then at the end of the day, you reflect on what made the day great and where you want to grow from there.
Getting into the practice of OWNING your life, your attitude, your energy and focus will change your thought patterns and it will allow you to live into your heart and passion.
Are you willing to be obsessed in facets of your life in order to see success, or are you satisfied with being average?
I want to see you smile, to laugh out loud, to love with all of your heart and to do the things that light you up inside. Together we can lift each other up and when we are surrounded by our tribe – we literally can FLY!
